Being sick all weekend, I didn’t know what to expect to show
up on North County Now web. The first new article was I saw was entitled
“Massena sentenced to seven years in prison for receiving child pornography”. I
wasn’t going to blog about it because it could just turn into an opinion piece.
But at the end of the article talked a little about the Project safe Childhood,
which I have never heard about and decided to look into that.
If you’re wondering what the news article was about, Robert
Girard (from Massena, New York) received his sentence of 84 months in prison
for one count of “receipt of child pornography” (News article) yesterday. The
sentence also included a “term of supervised release, registration as a sex
offender, payment of a $100 special assessment, and forfeiture of any equipment
of materials involved in the offense” (News article)
Project Safe Childhood is a “unified and comprehensive
strategy to combat child exploitation” (Project Safe Childhood). What I found
interesting is that it includes all levels of government and the public
awareness, also the private sector. I was surprised to find out Project Safe
Childhood has been around since May 2006 and that it is the Department of
Justice taking on this project. I know why the Department of Justice would be
in charge of the project but I surprised at that not more groups and or
departments are not involved. Also, I liked their “five essential components”
which are “building partnerships” (maybe this is why they don’t list other
groups or departments involved because there would be so many), “coordinating
law enforcement, training PSC partners, public awareness, and accountability”
(Project Safe Childhood). I liked that last two the most because it gets everyone involved when they is a crisis involving a child.
